In which Ellie teaches me how to sound smart in high school English

Background: this weekend, I am taking a poetry class with my old high school English teacher. Seeing as my dearest friend, Ellie, is an English teacher. I asked her for assistance.

me: did you do my poetry homework yet?

Ellie: nope

i got annoyed that your english teacher didn’t properly punctuate ted hughes’s name

and gave up

me: ELLIE

i need something smart to say

Ellie: say something about art mimicking life

and life mimicking art

me: is that specific to these poems? or does that apply to all poems?

Ellie: then throw around “pathos,” “logos,” and “ethos”

english teachers eat that shit up

me: i only know “ethos”

can i just say that three times?

Ellie: no definitely say all three

Happy Valentine’s Day from my father…

My dad was inspired by my client work in his Valentine note this year and sent me the following:

I hope you will be my Valentine again. I have FOCUSED in advance on it so I hope to leave you no ESCAPE. The FUSION of city and suburban life continues to agree with us. Some days I awaken here with the strength of a TAURUS or an EXPLORER. I love you, D.

Did you get it? Pretty clever for a chemistry major!

FYI, I did say yes.

Patented Unterekless Super Bowl Recap – with only one uninspired bullet about football

So, ummm, I’m kind of a big football fan. Or not at all. In fact, I’m a little more like this guy:

So… some thoughts on the Super Bowl:

  • The little I’ve watched of the actual game has been pretty compelling.
  • Not as compelling as the East Dillon Lions.
  • Anyone who didn’t like the Groupon ads, needs a sense of humor. And needs to view the full campaign on their Save the Money site.
  • The Chevy Cruze ad with the post-first date status update was creepy. Chevy, you’re supposed to promote CARS and not STALKING.
  • Favorite ads of the game:

VW’s The Force (beautifully distributed – built HUGE social buzz ahead of time… enough so that my mother who doesn’t know how to email a YouTube link was able to tell me about it)

Chrysler’s Imported from Detroit (beautifully executed)

  • Most disgusting thing I saw all game? A-Rod feeding Cameron. Gross. (HT BuzzFeed for the screen capture)

My parents the urbanites

Many of my friends know that my parents recently moved from our family home in Swarthmore to Center City Philadelphia because they were ready for a change and a bit more action. As my mother told me, “you just don’t get how fun we are. We’re really fun. Everyone except you thinks we’re really hip.”

For the record, I think my parents are the most fun 64-year olds I know and I’m sure their condo building that has 11 floors of 30-somethings and 1 floor of 60-somethings is really excited to have them.

Anyway, they’re almost all unpacked and the new place is coming together:

What I like most though are the new phone calls I get from my super hip mom. Here’s an exact exchange we shared when she called me from her cell phone.

Mom: Missy! I had to call because I’m thinking of you right now!

Me: Ok… why?

Mom: Well, I’m just doing the most cool urban thing. I mean, I’ve only been a city dweller for a few days, but what I’m doing right now is just so you! I mean, I was doing this and I realized that only my cosmopolitan daughter would do this.

Me: What are you doing, Mom?

Mom: I’m walking home from work and talking on my cell phone at the same time!

Me: Ummm… okay…

Not sure what my mother looks like as the coolest, hippest, most urban woman in town?

I should add that she’s also the happiest I’ve ever heard her sound. Or at least she comes across as happy when she’s doing super cosmopolitan things like talking on her cell phone while walking around a city!!!

Just some links…

Here are some things that I’ve found interesting of late:

  • The Dancers Among Us photo project is just incredible. Too many amazing photos to go through on this blog so ALL of you should click over and check it out.
  • Attention road warriors, this one’s for you: Carpets for Airports. A fantastic collection of the best of ugly airport carpets around the world. (HT @KaitlynWilkins)
  • “Bohemian Rhapsody” on the ukulele from TED. Amazing.
  • I often share information from my favorite car company, but am really excited to follow what BMW is doing with their Activate the Future documentary series. Four films will be coming out in February about the future of mobility; not only does the content look like it will be really really interesting, but it’s a very clever exercise in marketing and positioning.
  • These haunting images of Detroit made their way around the web and I saw them a few times in a few places. Objectively, the photos are stunningly composed and tell a sad sad story. As someone who goes to southeast Michigan pretty regularly, I think these pictures tell an incomplete story though so for anyone who watches Dateline or sees these photos and thinks Detroit is basically a U.S. Sarajevo, you’re wrong.

Reflecting on 2010

The end of the year is a time of top 10 lists, thoughts on the past, and hopes for the future. Since I’m a fan of lists, here are 10 things I learned this year:

  1. There’s absolutely nothing more painful than confronting the mortality of a family member. Many of those close to me know that the first half of 2010 was an *extremely* difficult time for my family. Worse than dealing with terrible family news was dealing with a constantly changing prognosis and having an unclear path of action. I have never cried more or been more disoriented at work than I was January through June.
  2. Clarity is a real gift. I’m pretty direct and prone to making quick decisions and following through on them. As I observe others struggle with this, I’m grateful for my own ability to decide and move on. From choosing a restaurant to ending a not ideal relationship rather than waiting for it to die, I feel better about everything when I put a stake in the ground and go with it. For reference, check this out.
  3. I really enjoy country music. For a girl who’s not into manual labor, I could not possibly enjoy the twang of a guitar or lyrics about corn and tractors any more. While I’ve loved country music since I was little and sang Hank Williams (Sr) and Willie Nelson songs with my dad, I realized recently, that it’s the only genre where I can honestly say I like 75% of the music enough to not change the radio.
  4. Metallic flats are a 5’10″ gal’s best friend. I bought 9 pairs of metallic flats in 2010. I returned one.
  5. Do not ever go to McDonald’s on M Street for a snack post-midnight. @MsSpinach and I did and a stranger showed us a picture of his own genitalia. No McFlurry will ever take that memory away.
  6. I work with wonderful people. Not sucking up at all, but my co-workers (and former co-workers) are some of my favorite people which makes going to work every day a pleasure. Follow #Ogilvy360DI and #360DI (because we haven’t totally chosen a hashtag…) for more great banter. But know that the best stuff happens over email. And the absolute best stuff is printed out and posted on the “Natty Mail” wall that @KaitlynWilkins and I share.
  7. Sometimes, I get so caught up on “what’s next” that I don’t enjoy “what’s happening.” And no, I’m not talking about the TV show. I have noticed that when I’m not 100% happy with where I live or other details of my life, I very actively start thinking about moving and making changes. But sometimes that concept of “leaving before I leave” really prevents me from making the most of what I’m doing in the moment.
  8. Even a tired franchise can reinvent itself. I thought Survivor, Top Chef, and Real Housewives had all seen better days. Let me tell you -  Survivor Heroes v. Villains, Top Chef All Stars, and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills have proven me wrong. When is Flavor of Love coming back?!
  9. Gchat is beyond essential to the way I live my life. My predominant communication with two of my best friends in California, one of my brothers, and many of my coworkers happens over gchat. I actually couldn’t imagine life without it. Maybe even more so than DVR and a smartphone… and it takes a LOT for me to say that. Despite believing in Facebook, I don’t feel that way about Facebook chat – I think gchat is a more personal place for me. I’ll accept most friend requests on Facebook, but gchat is way more private than that.
  10. I have the best family in the entire world. My parents are more fun, more generous, more compassionate, and ten times stronger than I knew — even in 2009. My brothers and I are unbelievably lucky to have them — and to be able to make fun of them as much as we do. (Sorry, Mom, I know it was a rough Christmas from that perspective… at least you didn’t buy us Nutcracker tickets this time?!) Similarly, while I am VERY different from both of my brothers, I can’t think of two people who I love, respect, enjoy, or roll my eyes at more.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on 2010. If I only think about 2010 from about July forward, it was a really great year. And if I take the year as a whole, I can’t think of one during which I learned more about myself or life in general.
