You really should see “Slumdog Millionaire”

Admittedly, now seems an odd (although not necessarily inappropriate) time to urge someone to see a film based in Mumbai — especially one where the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is a featured location.  However, Slumdog Millionaire is one of the best films I’ve seen in ages (and the critics seem to overwhelmingly agree with me).

Joe Morgenstern says:

I’ve never seen anything like “Slumdog Millionaire,” and I welcomed the spectacle with open eyes. In these worsening times for feature films, timidity and mediocrity often vie for bottom honors at the multiplex. “Slumdog” breaks through to the top.

Poor Melissa got stuck seeing it with me and, like “Traffic,” I had to duck out a few times since I tend to get squeamish during torture scenes, violence, and things that I suspect might scare me without first seeing them.  Please don’t think that the whole movie is like this either; it’s just an incredibly rich and well-woven tapestry with a compelling story, deep and truly human characters, and a fascinating backdrop.

It looks like it might be another good film coming out of the East ala Ohm Shanti Ohm.
