I laughed (really), I cried (really), and I made a kickass "giraffadog"

A lovely evening tonight with my beloved Barbara. The F train and I had a bad (i.e. unairconditioned, smelly, 7-train-esque) experience so I was late and Barbara was waiting for me at Caracas Arepa Bar with fried sweet plantains on the table.

A quick word about Caracas Arepa Bar: it’s one of my favorite places in the city. The food (predominately arepas and empanadas) is delicious and the waitstaff is so kind. Moreover, while I love meat pies — making empanadas are an automatic winner — the arepas are phenomenal. So you should go! Also, they have these simply divine banana milkshakes.

After dinner, we went to see Twisted: A Balloonamentary which I’d blogged about earlier.

You need to track it down and go see it. Parts of it are laugh out loud hilarious and then there are some more emotional moments when I may or may not have lost it bawling… clearly I have some repressed feelings about balloons to work through.

Balloon twisters are a fascinating set and the Gospel twisters are particularly interesting. One guy cries everytime he twists a Jesus on the cross. Then there’s the great Wandini who made me laugh even though she never said anything funny.

At the end, one of the filmmakers Sara Taksler answered questions and taught us how to make a balloon dog because “if you can make a dog, you can make anything.”

Barbara and I both twisted dogs… ummm… you can judge for yourself whose is best.

Karen’s “Giraffadog” — okay, the neck’s a little long, but all the right parts and twists are there.

Barbara’s “Poo Poo Poodle” — proportion issues, only one ear and an extra neck twist.

Seriously, go see Twisted. It’s playing in Ann Arbor this weekend, Ellie!
